Shonen Papani / Yoshino Oishi
Shonen Papani (1983) follows one, Ghanaian boy, Papani, who travelled to Nagano in Japan, following his father's diplomatic job. The book is divided into three parts, following Papani at 6, 10, when he returns to Ghana, and then at 13, when he travels to Europe with his father again, to London and there tries to adapt to the still quite racist (see the picture in a school bus) British society in the 1970s, when the cycle was made. The boy's trust in Oishi transpires from his gaze and smile, as he plays with the photographer, but so do his alienation and sadness, when he finds himself in the new surroundings. We deeply recommend this one!
